WEST HILLS RESIDENCE
KITCHEN & POWDER RENOVATION, FURNISHINGS
This interior design project started with a renovation of a historic home nestled in the hills of West Portland, breathing new life into its classic bones while injecting a sophisticated, modern sensibility. The challenge was to honor the home's inherent character while creating a contemporary living space tailored to the client's refined tastes.
The centerpiece of the renovation was a complete gut remodel of the kitchen, transforming it into a bright and functional hub. Inset cabinetry, painted in a timeless, soft hue, provided a seamless backdrop for the show-stopping white oak island, its warm tones anchoring the space. The design was further elevated by the installation of luxurious marble countertops, their veining adding depth and visual interest.
This emphasis on natural stone continued in the living room, where a striking marble surround framed the fireplace, creating a focal point that seamlessly blended historical charm with modern sophistication. Throughout the main living areas, including the dining room and living room, the design approach centered on a delicate balance between preservation and innovation. Original architectural details were cleaned up, but preserved, while contemporary lighting fixtures and carefully curated finishes introduced a fresh, updated aesthetic.
A key element of the renovation was the integration of white oak accents. In the den, a sleek, modern wet bar crafted from white oak provided a stylish and functional entertaining space. In the powder room, a floating white oak vanity, topped with a beautiful marble slab, created a sense of lightness and airiness. Both the kitchen hood and the powder room walls, finished in a textured plaster, added a tactile dimension, contrasting beautifully with the smooth surfaces of the marble and wood.
The lighting scheme played a crucial role in achieving the desired ambiance. Modern, minimalist fixtures were strategically placed to highlight architectural features and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow accentuated the textures of the marble, plaster, and white oak, adding depth and dimension to the spaces.
Ultimately, this project represents a successful fusion of old and new. By respecting the home's historic integrity and infusing it with contemporary design elements, the renovation created a timeless and elegant sanctuary that reflects the client's modern lifestyle while honoring the rich history of their West Portland home.
